A successful start for the HEUFT TeKnowledge: reducing risks and avoiding liability cases

b通过 Hilmar Wagner 在上 25.09.2008

HEUFT not only offers groundbreaking products. HEUFT provides integral solutions. The start of the new HEUFT TeKnowledge series of seminars proved this impressively. Renowned outside experts and specialists from HEUFT SYSTEMTECHNIK GMBH provided the participants with carefully targeted practical knowledge for increased product safety around the filler based on a valuable legal background and the presentation of real devices.

Professor Udo Bühler, an acknowledged adviser to companies in the beverage industry, provided a valuable, legal background to such subjects as product safety and liability matters.
Professor Udo Bühler, an acknowledged adviser to companies in the beverage industry, provided a valuable, legal background to such subjects as product safety and liability matters.

"Reducing risks and producing product safety:  current legal issues and innovative devices" was the title of the free–of–charge seminar held on 16 September at the HEUFT factory in Burgbrohl.  Numerous representatives from breweries and mineral water producers received up–to–date information regarding subjects such as technical law, product liability and legal amendments in the finished pack sector on this occasion.  The presentations regarding high–performance inspection and quality assurance solutions from HEUFT demonstrated how product safety can be produced in real terms and maintained.

Eliminating liability cases and loss of image

"In the opinion of the engineer the legal practitioner obstructs success."  Professor Udo Bühler began his presentation about current legal issues for beverage technicians with these words.  But legal restrictions as regards product safety are important in order to prevent health hazards for the consumer.  "Avoid faults" – this must be the motto for the responsible technician in the filling plant according to Professor Bühler.  Otherwise those responsible are not only threatened with liability cases which involve severe consequences as regards criminal and civil law but also a serious loss of image.

The renowned adviser to companies in the beverage industry and holder of the chair at the Mainz College of Higher Education for private business, sales, corporate and European law explained to his audience the differences between wilful conduct and gross negligence, provided information on exercising care and pointed out that in this connection the safety solutions on the market at the time of the conduct to be judged are applicable.  His conclusion:  "You can reduce this risk by technically retrofitting with HEUFT".  In this way many faults can already be eliminated in advance.  And avoiding faults is the ideal way to increased product safety.

HEUFT devices achieve more than the finished pack ordinance stipulates

Jean Titze expert on food law and quality certification from the Weihenstephan Science Centre also explained:  "Laws have not been made in order to annoy you".  They are just used for consumer protection and fair trade – for instance the finished pack ordinance which he dealt with during the first part of his presentation.  Mr Titze explained in detail the challenges they face the drinks producer with and what to pay attention to regarding nominal filling quantities.  The performance of the HEUFT inspection solutions for checking the fill level even exceed the requirements of the finished pack ordinance:  a random, statistical quality assurance procedure is only stipulated in this connection and "not a complete check as achieved by the devices from the HEUFT company".

Mr Titze´s forecast, regarding the consequences of the new EU directive for determining the nominal filling quantities in finished packs, informed the participants of the seminar about what the future will bring – namely an almost complete deregulation.  Therefore as from the spring of 2009 almost all fully packed products in any nominal filling quantity can be placed on the market.  Mr Titze said:  "even a ´devil´s beer´ with a fill amount of 666 millilitre will then be possible".  The result could be an increase in the number of brands in the bottling hall with which the demand for high–performance quality assurance systems – such as those already supplied by HEUFT – will continue to increase.

High–performance solutions for increased product safety in the filler section

The HEUFT specialists Dr Franz Nachtsheim, Dirk Henschke and Dr Thomas Jahnen showed what these really offer in order to guarantee product safety in the filler section in their clear presentations.  Not only the new acoustic bottle burst detection was presented which minimises the risk of bottle bursts and the resulting contamination caused to adjacent bottles due to flying pieces of glass.  In–house technologies, which reliably track down fill tubes and other dangerous foreign objects in products which have already been filled, also impressed the guests.  In addition the HEUFT presentations dealt with precise quantifying and locator solutions as well as test bottle logs during the fill level detection.  The network–based data connection for production management, also presented in detail, fulfilled the requirements of the two outside experts as regards the detailed documenting and archiving of all the quality control data collected.

It was agreed at the end of the all–day seminar:  light was not only shed on the subject "reducing risks and producing product safety" from a theoretical aspect.  The integrated tour of the factory and in particular the HEUFT solutions which were presented offered numerous additional benefits for the day to day practice as regards a filling line.  The next event in the HEUFT TeKnowledge series will also offer this:  on 22 October the subject "foreign object detection in food" will be dealt with in detail.
